Drivers face major detours as Highway 37 in the North Bay closes for the weekend

A portion of Highway 37 in the North Bay remains closed through early Monday morning. The weekend-long closure meant detours for drivers, but Caltrans said the payoff will be worth it.

Caltrans shut down the highway Friday night between Mare Island and Sears Point, so crews could do work as part of emergency preparedness for El Niño storm preparation. This weekend, Caltrans focused on median demolition and moving K-Rail to shift traffic.

“To move traffic over so that we can complete some work to basically prevent flooding and we want to be able to have this highway open so that when we get our El Niño storms and winter storms, so we can keep this artery open,” Clayton warren with Caltrans said.

Caltrans says during the summer, the agency noticed there was some erosion going on in the asphalt, so it had time to plan out how to solve the problem.

“We are moving some of the pillars that you see there the K-Rail system to the westbound side and we are going to allow our crews to be able to shore up the road so that we can actually lift portions of the road 3 feet,” Warren said.

Work to lift the road will follow. But for drivers this weekend, it meant a long detour to get around the closure.
