Harry Potter-themed Halloween display brings some magic to this Sunnyvale neighborhood

(KRON) -- One pair of homeowners in Sunnyvale is taking their Halloween display very "Siriusly."

The Jacobsons live off Sunnymount Avenue in Sunnyvale, and for the past six years, they have brought a little extra whimsy to their neighborhood around Halloween with an immersive and intricate Harry Potter-themed display.

"Our kids, when they were younger, really wanted to do fancy Halloween decorations, but I spent my whole career working with young children, so it was important to me that whatever we did not be scary or too gory," said Lindsay Jacobson, one of the homeowners.

Lindsay said that although she loves other scary and haunting decorations, it was important to her that their display would be welcoming for families, little children, and adults alike. That is how the Harry Potter theme came to life.

The Jacobsons said that the Harry Potter series brought their family together, instilling a love for reading in their children.

"As a family, it was just something we could share," said Quinn.

Now, this display is not your average house decoration, or even something you can buy in the store. The Jacobsons have fully transformed their house into the wizarding world, taking nearly the whole year to redesign and improve upon last year's display.

"We really start planning in November and December because, over the summer, when we have more time, we will actually be building the stuff for next year. In September, we are purely in the assembly and getting ready to go out phase," said Quinn.

The display includes many of the series' most memorable moments, including the flying car crash from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Hogsmeade window displays with mechanical animations, Quidditch hoops, Platform 9 3/4, Hagrid’s Hut, and so much more.

"To watch young children come in their robes and experience that, it is just heartwarming.... It's just fun to see the community come out like that," said Quinn.

And the display is not just for children. Lindsay said that the display has brought their neighborhood and the greater Bay Area together.

"For many folks, this moment in time feels hard on different levels, so we just love bringing that joy and whimsy," said Lindsay.

The exhibit is free for all to enjoy. Lindsay said if attendees insist on donating, to instead pass it forward instead.

"Sometimes people offer to give us donations, and we encourage people not to give us donations, instead to donate that to organizations that support the LGBTQ community," said Lindsay.

If you are interested in stopping by, the Jacobsons' Halloween display can be found at 598 Sunnymount Avenue in Sunnyvale, California. Animations will run every day until Halloween from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the best viewing conditions just after sunset.
